Bus Rapid Transit

Many cities which cannot afford a metro or subway but require public transport networks with high passenger transport capacities consider establishing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) networks. Generally, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) offers the service quality of traditional rail bound local passenger transport systems such as tram or metro but at lower costs and with the same flexibility of traditional bus transit.

Since Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) doesn’t operate in mixed traffic environments but has its own street corridors with the own right of way instead, the authorities have approved the use of multi articulated buses (multiple car buses, often so-called “Bus-Tram” or “Bus-Rail” systems). Recently, in rare cases 100% battery operated electrical buses are used for BRT applications having some characteristics of “Bus-Tram” systems. The own bus route also allows for very low headways but the infrastructure requirements in terms of consumption of land is high. Thus, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is seldom appropriate for cities in areas with high urban density.

Description:

The new bus-tram passenger transport system is a 100% battery-driven system for local passenger transport that combines the obvious advantages of trams, buses, and Automated People Movers (APMs). It offers flexible alignments and the low infrastructural requirements of buses as well as passenger capacities and the zero- emissions of trams. Thanks to the clever construction of the guideway, the bus-tram system can drive on elevated guideways, like Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) systems. A combination of manual operation on the ground and a semi-automated operation on elevated guideways is also possible. The emission-free and silent drive system enables to drive in sensitive downtown areas.

Based on the unique battery switch system it is possible to operate the system 100% electrically, thus in an environmentally friendly way 24 hours a day. Moreover, the battery switch system offers numerous advantages such as a low empty weight of the vehicles as well as high reliability and availability. The regulated electro-hydraulic multiple axle steering mechanism guarantees directional stability of all the wheels and enables particularly narrow curve radii. Thanks to its bidirectional operation capability it can simply drive around obstacles and to turn around within very little space. Thus, the new transportation system is an ideal means of transport for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) applications.
