Typical system boundaries of local passenger transport systems

Local passenger transport systems can be classified according to several criteria. Drive type, degree of automation, Right-Of-Way (ROW), track guidance, and operation represent basic classification features.

For example, passenger transport systems can be fully automated, partially automated, or manually operated. In addition, they can have an exclusive Right-Of-Way (ROW) and operate completely free of intersections and independent of individual traffic. However, a semi-exclusive ROW (partially in mixed traffic) or a non-exclusive ROW (completely in mixed traffic) are also common practice in public local passenger transport. Another classification criterion may be the primary operation of the mass transit system: E.g. at-grade, on elevated guideways, or in tunnels.
